Infographics on WCG 2019 Xi’an Released

World Cyber Games published infographics detailing some of the performance metrics of WCG 2019 Xi’an, 100 days after the successful esports tournament wrapped up in July. The infographics highlight WCG 2019 Xi’an’s diverse array of achievements, which fit the new WCG vision of ‘Global esports festival for a better world.’WCG 2019 Xi’an comprised of 12 events in the Game Sports sector including Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, Dota2, and Clash Royale, and 4 events in the New Horizons sector, which pioneers for new fields of sports using new technologies such as Robot Fighting Championship, AI Masters, VR Championship, and Scratch Creative Challenge, with total of 16 different gaming events. Starting with the national online preliminaries in March, WCG 2019 broadcasted matches of over 40,000 players from 111 countries, which were offered across eight platforms and 13 languages, achieving 193 million viewership, the largest number among all the other comprehensive esports tournaments. The WCG 2019 Xi’an Final was attended by approximately 120,000 fans.  WCG CEO Jung Jun Lee said, “The infographics show that despite this being the first WCG in six years, with WCG 2019 Xi’an we were able to open a new chapter as a comprehensive esports tournament, which also gave us an opportunity to confirm the high level of interest out there among global esports fans.” He continued, “We will do our best to put on an even better event next year thanks to the encouragement of so many people, and our achievements this year.”After successfully hosting the WCG 2019 Xi’an event, WCG is already busy making preparations for WCG 2020, including selecting the venue and games. WCG 2003 ‘Expansion of Spectrum’, Console Game Added as Official Game

16 years ago, this week, WCG 2003 was held in Olympic Park, Seoul, South Korea(Oct 12th ~ 18th)562 players from 55 nations participated in 2003 and Age of Mythology, Half Life : Counter Strike, FIFA 2003, Starcraft : Broodwar, Unreal Tournament, Warcraft 3 and Halo were featured as official titles. Quake 3, which had been official title since WCGC, was excluded in the event and for Age of Empires series, Age of Mythology was chosen which had released recently. Halo : Combat Evolved was the first ever console game in WCG history. In WCG 2003, 55 nations participated, which was increased by 10 from previous 45 nations. In addition to this, console game was added as official title, and the game format was changed from double elimination to single elimination, laying foundation for the event.The oversea awareness had increased too, and over 1,600 players participated in regional qualifier that was held in Iran for the first time. Among the official titles, FIFA 2003 created a meaningful moment. Germany’s FIFA twins, Daniel and Dennis Schellhase dominated the medals for FIFA. Dennis Schellhase played a great part in Germany winning the overall championship, by adding gold medals from single and national tournament. Chinese Taipei won 2 gold medals and a silver medal from Age of Mythology and Warcraft 3, and took 2nd place, surpassing South Korea which had been champion for 2 consecutive years.WCG 2003 laid the groundwork for the event to become an international event. The number of global participants increased and some of the nations showed great potential. Apart from Starcraft, many new players made their names known. From WCG 2004, WCG was held in countries outside South Korea, such as Singapore, USA and Italy, and this was possible based on the experience and know-how from previous 3 years.This was the first time that to-be hall of famers made their debut, such as the Schellhase brothers of FIFA and Manuel ‘Grubby’ Schenkhuizen for Warcraft 3.

Rise to a Global Event, WCG 2004, The First Oversea Event

15 years ago today, WCG 2004 was held in San Francisco, USA.640 players from 63 countries participated for Counter-Strike, FIFA 04, StarCraft: Brood War, Unreal Tournament, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, Halo, Need for Speed and Project Gotham Racing 2.Several changes have been made in WCG 2004, with Project Gotham Racing and Need for Speed being added as the first racing games, and team based National Event was abolished.2004 was a meaningful year in the history of WCG. It was the first time the event was held outside Korea. The concept of hundreds of players representing their countries competing was established in 2004.Renowned media such as New York Times, CNN, ABC, and Reuters highlighted the potential of WCG as an esports Olympics. It succeeded in attracting the attention towards esports, which was an unfamiliar concept in the United States at that time. WCG introduced dance parties and rock concerts for the general public, making the competition a cultural festival, not just a game event.Seeing its potential as a global scale championship, WCG expanded its scope, hosting in cities in Europe, Southeast Asia, and China, starting with the United States.Matthew 'Zyos' Leto won the gold medal in Halo consecutively in 2003 and 2004, and Laurens 'Lauke' Pluymaekers, who had won the silver medal in previous year at the Unreal Tournament, won the gold medal and became the Hall of Famer.The Netherlands won the Grand Championship with three gold medals in Warcraft 3, Unreal Tournament and Project Gotham Racing. Warcraft III player Manuel 'Grubby' Schenkhuizen who had won a bronze medal in previous year, contributed to the Dutch Grand Championship with a gold medal.WCG 2004 was the prelude to a full scale global event. Although it was the first world competition and there was a lack of crowds due to low esports awareness in North America, it was able to show the potential for a global esports competition.

WCG 2007, The heyday began.

12 years ago this week, WCG 2007 was held at Qwest field, Seattle, USA (OCT 3~7)700 esports athletes from 75 countries participated for 12 games; Counter-Strike, Warcraft 3, StarCraft, FIFA 07, Command and Conquer, Carom 3D, Age of Empire, Need for Speed, Dead or Alive 4, Gears of War, Project Gotham Racing 3 and Tony Hawk Project 8.WCG 2007 was held in USA and expanded its console games to four, to strengthen its diversity. Beginning in 2007, the number of participating countries and athletes increased as the number of official games increased to 10 or more.The US, which had a large population of console gamers, won the WCG 2007 Grand Championship with three gold, two silver and one bronze medals.Brazil, which had not been successful since the 2005 event, was tied for second place with Korea, with the best performance since its participation, winning two gold and one bronze medals.In the meantime, Eastern European countries that had had great run in Counter Strikes, FIFA, Warcraft 3, etc. did not fare well. Only Ukraine won a bronze medal in the Counter Strike and Bulgaria won a bronze medal in FIFA 07.Among the games, FIFA 07 received the biggest spotlight. The German gold medalist Daniel 'hero' Schellhase, who had won the gold medals in 2003 and 2006, was once again at the top and won the third championship. It was the first consecutive championship record for FIFA tournament. His twin brother Dennis 'styla' Schellhase had already won three gold medals in 2003(Single and Double) and 2005 championships and Hero also won his third Gold in WCG 2007, raising their family's honor.‘iamgrunt’ Kang Byung Gun, a Korean who was known as the best Age of Empire player, won the gold medal without dropping a single game. After six years of winning the WCG 2001, he won his second title and became the Hall of Famer.WCG entered its peak in its seventh year. In 2006, 70 countries participated and the number of participating countries began to increase, and 75 countries participated in WCG 2007. WCG 2010 ‘10th Anniversary’, The Coming of a New Era.

9 years ago today, September 30, 2010, was the day WCG 2010 was held at the Los Angeles Convention Center.WCG 2010 was attended by 450 e-sports athletes from 60 countries, and featured Counter Strike, FIFA 10, StarCraft: Brood war, Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne, Carom 3D, Tekken 6, Trackmania, Guitar Hero, Forza Motorsports 3, and Asphalt 5 as official games, and League of Legends, Lost Saga, and Quake Wars Online as promotional games.   Above all, WCG 2010 marked the 10th anniversary of the event, the first International League of Legends competition, and the last official event for StarCraft : Brood War.StarCraft, had been an influential game in esports scene for 10 years, and ended with WCG 2010, and was replaced by StarCraft 2 since2011. South Korea has a record of not losing a gold medal for 10 years since its first WCG competition.In addition, WCG 2010 was the year in which international competition of 'League of Legends' started, and until this day, it has been the most popular game for nine years. Many pro-gamers hailed the new multiplayer game League of Legends which was selected as a promotional event at WCG 2010 and became official game in the following year, and it gained huge popularity. Counter-Logic, a team of US-Canada players, won the first gold medal for WCG 2010 League of Legends.WCG 2010 held many surprises. In Counter-Strike, Ukraine’s Natus Vincere made an upset by winning the gold medal after beating Poland, while in StarCraft, 19-year-old Young-ho ‘Flash’ Lee won the gold medal and announced the birth of a new star player.Germany continued to gain strength in FIFA 10, with Kevin ‘Daimonde’ Santner scoring his first gold medal. In Warcraft 3, Sungsik ‘ReMinD’ Kim won the first Korean Warcraft 3 gold medal by defeating Manuel ‘Grubby’ Schenkhuizen, who had won five medals, including two gold medals.WCG 2010 was a competition in earnest to diversify categories by expanding promotional games for the next decade.WCG 2010 was the third time the event was held in the United States. The combination of console and online games drew local fans' response, and the live broadcast was successful in bringing the lively atmosphere to fans around the world. Republic of Korea managed to take the Grand Championship for three consecutive years with three gold medals, two silver medals and three bronze medals.
